As a part of the masterplanning, we are proceeding with several studies as personnel become available. These are: a. Layout of the hot strip mill and appurtances in the East Works and in the new area to the south based on Earl Denner*s calculations. b. Layout of melting facilities in the area adjacent to existing 0. H. Shop No. 2 and the blast furnace. c. Layout of the slabbing mill area. d. Layout of future soaking pits and future slabbing mill. e. Layout of coating and finishing facilities in the East Works. f. Economic study of replacing existing 25 cycle power generating equipment with conventional power. g. Sizing and locating future oxygen plant. h. Economic study of alternate methods of handling slabs. i. Study of fhture water requirements and existing systems. j. Study of existing process systems. k* Study of existing electrical power distribution systems. l. Study of material flow through the existing plant. m. Completion of the product flow study. We expect to be able to present our design of the Hot Strip Mill to the cosmittee upon their return from Japan about April 20. 3. At a meeting with the Armco Pollution Control Coamittee, we were given guide lines to use in masterplanning the new facilities. Basically, Armco is of the opinion that every reasonable precaution should be taken to avoid contamination of the atmosphere and streams. It was stated that the existing facilities would have to be equipped with dust collectors, precipitators, acid waste removal equipment, etc., in the near future or else like 0. H. Shop Mo. 1, be abandoned. Specific limits were not and will aot be established except in a general way. However, by working very closely with the Armco pollution experts, we will be able to recommend the installation of equipment that will satisfy the state and federal agencies involved.
