Venable, 1803 UPDATE OF THE TABERSHAW COOPER MORTALITY STUDY ON VINYL CHLORIDE WORKERS The original Tabershaw Cooper Associates (TCA) study conducted through the MCA (CMA) included deaths through 1972. The report was completed by Equitable Environmental Health (EEH) in January 1978. The CMA panel on Vinyl Chloride Research is investigating the interest in a 5 to6year update on this population and is suggesting that since there is no true successor to TCA/EEH that Environmental Health Associates (EHA) be used to conduct the study. This group includes Drs. Tom Mi 1 by and Frank Whorton, as well as Dick Davis who was with EEH. Dr. Clark Cooper is their consultant. I have been strongly supporting updating this study, because the addi tional man years and additional deaths will help put some of the relationships in the old study in better perspective. I will attend the meeting November 14 and welcome your comments on the proposal. If you feel someone from your group should accompany me, please let me know. Ralph, do you want to assign someone from you group to help monitor this project? Harry, we estimate this project will cost about $300M to $350M before we get done. Dow-will contribute about a sixth over a 3-year period. I think Lyman and Hugh have factored this into their budget. We will also need to lean on other companies to support this study or at least to let their records be used. We cannot afford to lose anyone or any company from the original cohort. John, we will need complete cooperation of the medical and personnel people to assure that employee records are complete and accurate. This study will receive a lot of scrutiny from OSHA, NIOSH, and others and needs to be done right. It may be desirable to send out the protocol when arrangements are complete.
