We have completed the analysis of all UGK water samples and are working on the soil and sediment samples. The results of the water analysis are shown In the attached table. The soil and sediment results will be reported as soon as they are completed.
All the water samples contained at least three discernible
phases and were simply agitated to obtain a representative sample. A portion of the black oil (top layer) present In MVO
#1 (OR Log No. 19) was Isolated and analyzed. As suspected, It contained the bulk of the Aroclor, roughly 250 times as much as the agitated sample.
If It Is possible. It would He of help to us If you would employ the following sampling procedures.
Water Grab Samples
Water samples (~300 ml) should be obtained by direct Immersion of a 16 oz narrow neck screw cap (aluminum foil liner) bottle
5-6 times per sampling. The bottles should be labeled with the following Information:
Sample reference number Date taken (month and day) ' Description of sampling site
Composite water samples taken over extended periods of time should be left In the bottles they are sampled In and sent to us so that we can combine the hexane extracts. In this manner a more representative sample will be obtained.
Sediment
Sediment samples.( --250g) should be obtained by scraping off the
top 1-2 toches of surface material with a 16 oz wide mouth screw
.cap jar (aluminum foil liner) bottle. The bottles should be
'labeled In the same manner as the water samples.

A cover memo addressed to me listing the samples should be included with the samples so that they can be logged upon arrival and checked against the memo.
It Is helpful If a rough sketch of the area, with the sample sites marked on It, is Included.
