Dear Doctor Karrh:
The New York Academy of Sciences is planning a meeting to be held at its headquarters on Sentemher id, iQfli. to discuss the asbestos disability compensation claim issue. Our purpose is Vo "bring together representatives of parties concerned with this question who have not had an opportunity to meet together l to discuss how they can help each other in mitigating some of the consequences of this problem. To this end, we have issued invitations to the enclosed list of potential participants.
This will be a planning meeting to consider whet further action might be necessary. No substantive decisions will be made and attending it will not commit you to further participation in the discussions. The conduct of the meeting will be facil itated by Mr. Donald B. Straus, former President of the American Arbitration Association and current Chairman of the Science and Society Committee of The New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Irvine Satikgfg- an Honorary Life Governor of the Academy, who brought this problem to our attention, will also participate.
In making this call. The New York Academy of Sciences is fulfilling its traditional mission to convene meetings on sub jects which are science related. In recent years, by action of its Board of Governors, the Academy has devoted part of its efforts in calling together those who can elucidate and point to solutions of science-based public policy issues.
