Equally important, nothi ng in the 2011 di sapproval, the MCE complai n t , or the consent decree even menti ons dri nki ng water;it's al1 focused on aquati c 1ife and recreati o n . In general states are expected to establi sh water quality standards based on the designated uses for the associated bodies of wa te r. In the case of Mi ssouri 1akes, al1 1akes (there are 860) are expected to support heal thy aquati c life. Mi ssouri has also designated some 1akes (102) as source waters for dri nki ng wa te r. In those 1ak es. cri teri a would be developed to protect aquati c life and cri teri a would be developed to protect dri nki ng water us e. The fi nal cri teri a appli cable to those 1akes woul d refl ect the more stri ngent of the two use cases. Those 1akes that were classi fi ed sol ely for aquati c 1ife would just have criteria based on that us e. Thi s Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA Tier 3/4 ED 002061 00066202-00001 illustration assumes just two use cases, but there may be other use designations, such as recreation. The general pri nci pie would be the same. States are expected to develop criteria that protect the most sensitive designated uses. > > I hope thi s is helpful. > > .Mike___________ > Mi chael Shapi ro > Acti ng Assi stant Admi ni strator, Offi ce of Water US EPA, 4101M > 1200 Pennsylvani a A v e ., NW > Washi ngton, DC 20460 > 202-564-5700 > > ---- Origi nal Message----> From: Bennett, Tate > Sent: Tuesday, August 08, 2017 9:47 AM > T o : Shapi ro , Mi ke < Shapiro.Mike@epa.gov> > Cc: Garrett.Hawkins@mda.m o .g o v ; donp@fb.org; Greenwalt, Sarah <greenwalt.sarah@epa.gov> > Subject: Connecting you > All> > Per Mi ke and I 's di scussi on with Sarah, can you al1 connect as soon as possi ble and compare your interpretations on the nutrient standards requi rements for MO?
