Dear Cook; In viev of the fact that action must be taken promptly in connection vlth our share in the April convention,- I have come to the conclusion that you and your associate in Chicago fire the only ones vho are in position to act effectively iix association vith the other organisations. For this reason 1 should like it very much if you vould accept the chairmanship for the purposes of this meeting, thereby being the head man in arrangements made by AIHA. If you vill accept the chair manship, I think you should have the privilege of selecting your own tearn for carrying on. Therefore* although it is something of en imposition upon you, I vould like you to select the committees that vill have to dO vith the actual arranging of convention activities. I should be vllllng to assist you; at any point, and for this purpose I am quite vllllng to! visit you if and vhen you vlsh and also to give you any advice vhich I can at any time you require it. Nevertheless I cannot think in terms of responsibility vithout corresponding authority and, therefore, I feel that the best results vill be obtained if your local group, under your direction,; vill undertake the organization and supervision of the vork that needs to be done locally. One of the things that needs doing is the appointment of an effective committee on scientific exhibits. Last year you vill remember that Messrs Setterllnd and Taylor vere asked to undertake this job. I leave it to you as to vhether they should be asked again, and therefore this is only a reminder. In this connection I should like you to knov that the exhibit on Aviation Medicine vhich vas promised for last year by Dr. Ferris and his associates in the Medical Department vill be available if there is a place for it. This is a very beauti ful exhibit, vhich because of the failure of scientific meetings 7 f'; Mr. Warren A. Cock - 12; - October 18, U45 during the past ^ear, has not been shown to any other than very limited groups. I am sure you will remember our discussion of this subject in the past,; but I think it vorth while to suggest that the chair man or chairmen of this committee should undertake to see to it that scientific exhibits are not mixed in with commercial exhibits!, and that they shall not be so located as to compel one's attention to commercial exhibits. I feel very strongly on this point, and although it is not up to me to make the decision single-handed, 1 should feel that ve would be ill advised to put on scientific exhibits under our sponsorship unless they can be presented as we think they should be. Two additional committees have been appointed in the past, one on publicity and one on facilities and equipment. It is not quite apparent to me just what the last named committee is supposed to do, unless it concerns Itself with lanterns, movie projectoifs and similar items. You can use your own judgment in this regard. Certainly there should be some person of experience and judgment in charge of publicity, and in my opinion he should be a local man. You will knov much better how to handle this than I, and therefore if you accept my appointment as general chalxmaa, I trust you will take care of this matter. I wish to; remind you also that you have "been chairman of the Editorial Committee in the past and that in my feeling you should continue in this capacity by virtue of your experience. Phil Drinker is a member of the committee, and If It la possible there should be a member who has a relationship to "Industrial Medicine" vithout having any direct responsibility to the management of this journal. I should appreciate having your suggestions, since this is Intimately related to the problem of handling the papers that came to us in connection with the program. Perhaps the program committee should be represented on this Editorial Committee. What do you think? In the past the chairman of the Ccamdttee an Scientific Exhibits has been chairman of our Committee on Awards. 1 think this is a good policy so long as the awards are concerned only with the recognition of the best scientific exhibits. I know of no other awards that are to be made, and therefore unless you see objections I believe this can be handled by your dooklttee on Scientific Exhibits. As you are! aware we are expecting to have & meeting of the Board of Directors on tne evening of Kovember 14, at which time we shall expect a full report on what has been done toward the meeting.
