per neek for a period of not less than 8 months, to a concentration of manganese dust in t^e air enproxinating 5 ragms. 'per 100 cu. liters of air. A similar exposure of 100 guinea pigs to a concentration of dust approximating 25 mgms. per 100 cu. liters of air, such dust to be obtained through the use of so-called 200-mesh milled ore containing manganese dioxide in known nercentage. The maintenance of 100 guinea pigs as a control group for comparison with the above groups.
All guinea rigs dying durin: the period of exposure to be examined for possible presence of oneumonia and those shoving such a condition to be checked for the presence or absence of oneunococcus in connection with their conditions.

Observations to be made "t. suitable int-vrvals, ncroximctely 1 month, of:
IVeight changes Fertility -Blood ( total red count; differential white count) Urine ( specific gravity; sugar; albumin)
If no animals have lied v Lth.La the month then monthly one or two from each group shall be sacrificed to determine cross anthology ores ont. A swr.ole of lung tissue shall be examined microscopically ?nd if there is evidence of gross pathology in eir* other organs, microscopic ewe nivtion of such organs shall be made.
/t the '.'net of the oriod of exposure croup of 10 to 20 animals from y each concentration shall be kept for a period of 1 to 2 months in rhich time
v they shall be examined to determine to what extent manganese in the lung may be elimin- ted eft'"" the exposure has cessed or to v;iuit extent the luru has recovered from damage, if any, noted because o; the exocsure.

Except for the recovery grouns just mentioned nil tnir.als -it the end of (the exposure period, shall be killed and examined for gross pathological changes. (Jnj^ orgens show in- (such cK'inges)shr.ll be examined .nicrosco- -icr.-lly. An adequate
number of sa.moles ox lung tissue shell be examined microscopically to determine .'.at changes may have occurred ?.s a result of ihe pxoosuro to the dust containing manganese dioxide.- A determination should f-o be made in a fe animals to show the amount of manganese diox ide oresent in the lungs of ex ored animals for comparison with the similar determination in animals held for recovery period following the exposure to the duct.
Brief monthly oro rress re juris would bo recuostoci by the c om-r.ny and also permission to observe the oroprpes of experiments t .such time as might be desired.

If the contribution required by the sponsor company for the support of this study as originally estimated is insufficient for its completion the company shall be under no obligation to make addition?1 contribution unless it shall be duly notified as to the need for such further expense and agrees thereto.
If it is found practical for the c >m .-nr considering the sponsorship of this study to suopoi-t the above outlined r^oioct, full discretion .ould be granted as to the publication of the results :>?. n objective stucy by the company but it reserves the right to review the manurevi >* o: r/'^h - recoct nrior to publication and to determine, if at 11, in what nner the name of the sponsor cpmorny or any of its affiliates might be u~ed In connection with such publication. The comorny would rIso ish to dvire as to the publication in which the reoort shall nooear and the time of iccuCT.
If after the recci ot of the .resent rr.Ms.-te of f : ex enre to the comoany for the above stud'r it is decided to undertake s*jue, then the understanding bet.vc.cn the Laboratory and the company will be embodied in the form of a properly executed agreement, neither o-rty to h-ve env obligations in + his connection until such. greement ir execut.-d.
I trust that, tie above outline slates our problem as originally de scribed to you and tlv't if -e take favorable action on soon?*rrin? the study you would find it possible: to start the necessrr-- preparations reasonably soon, leather conditions hero are moderating but I do not, knar hov. you might be fixed v.it'n regard to \ our construction of the necessary r.unrters at this time in L'arnnac Lake. Hov lonv "ftor st.rrtinr do you believe it micht take to comolr.te such c rtuov?
On looking up some of my records I fin '. t>\t the concentration of dust in our mill room in 1925, ."hen re were having corns difficulty in kc-coing it under control, varied from 3.3A ngms. per 190 cu. liters to /.9 arms per 1**0 cu. litoT-p. This lias since been greatly reduced, but i bo not hove recent ligures. I have mentioned, one concentration oi : .oroxi/nately 5 nr:r.a. ..s representstive*of certain working conditions but believe we should h"W ob servations made also on a much higher concentr.* tion o"J Gur.t, such ar ould be present in .many shoos where no adeourte provision has been made for oust control.
If it in decided to go ahead -ith this study re can, of course, furnish all the 200-mesh milled aanranese ore which you would re .uire. As I recall it, t-bo African or**, vhich ' e would now have available, carries come 8Q-S5,;: manganese dioxide. Tie would, of course, be able to furnish von with an analysis of the material su iplied a t V-e time of any exnerlmont: 1 ' ork.
