In addition, API Committees look to the Toxicology Task Force to provide technical support for their regulatory advocacy efforts, often involving state or Federal government regulatory agencies (such as the EPA AEGL Committee, CalEPA OEHHA, etc.) or non-governmental standard-setting organizations (such as ACGIH). Supported activities currently include occupational exposure standards (e.g., hydrogen sulfide & mineral oil mist), soil remediation levels (e.g., tert butyl alcohol) and air / water contamination limits (e.g., naphthalene). Advocacy requests often arise unexpectedly and require prompt response. These activities often exceed available "sweat equity" from API and member company resources. This project funds expert consultant support for literature reviews, preliminary risk assessments, draft comments and similar front-end activities, which are tailored by the Task Force into a finished product, meeting business advocacy needs. Benefit to Industry: Technically unbalanced regulations and standards for petroleum products and hydrocarbon components of petroleum streams may cause significant business impact. Component-based regulations can impose significant burden on both production and refinery operations. This project helps assure that such regulatory proposals reflect proper scientific rigor and a balanced view of the scientific literature. *Future Costs Over Next 5 Years (2009-2013; in 2007 dollars): Regulatory advocacy for petroleum products and compounds of interest to the petroleum industry is expected to require an ongoing, sustained effort. Over the next five-year period, we estimate this effort will require level annual funding ($100K/year) to provide required support.
