TECHNICAL REVIEW >. ] Present: JUNE 19, 1974 / W. J. Vandemark H. D. Shephard D. J. Ha rino G. Fenton A. Sant Ighlan R. Dzuri1 la Ferrux/Hot Topping Compounds 1. Ferrux 270 - Due to the high cost, coarse Bail Mill Dust will be replaced. a. Phase I - with regular Ball Hill Dust b. Phase 2 - EP 5*+99F will be evaluated Action: 0. J. Marino 2. Follow up on field programs of EP 5*+99. Only Finkl has approved for production the use of this EP. Following are accounts that should be followed up: Wheeling Steel Finkl Burns Harbor Laclede Copperweld Bethlehem, Lackawanna JS-L, South & Aliquippa Bethlehem, Bethlehem Lukens 3-a. RM 531 --X - P. Partington has advised that he could bring on the 531 plant quickly. D. Marino advised that the use of 531X could help economics providing that the correct grade of graphite is available in the quantities required. D. Marino said that he had talked to the Product Manager of the Foundry Division in Tarrworth who is obtaining the required type of graphite. Don will spend some time with him during his forthcoming trip to England. If the RM is not equally available to the Group, we will have to ask Dr. Phoenix to get involved. 3-b. Ferrux usage in Europe is almost double what we use here in the States per ingot ton. We need to know the complete story. We will investigate overall economics, graphite supply and quality. 3-c. D. J. Marino to investigate the transfer of Ferrux production in Cleveland to the Mt. Braddock facility, all facets are to be considered; equipment, bulk handling, etc. Miscellaneous - RM 13 has been replaced by RM 33 (lower cost). Action: D. J. Marino to issue new standard recipes. Hot Tops 1. Cleveland Plant - W. J. Vandemark stated that there was no cost differential between the recipes of Profax 31 and EP 5*+65, which was agreed by all. The CO 19A9 -3- ) In addition, we should be-picking up a direct material savings by going to Injection forming because of the fact that we would be using less material. We could start some work with the K-4 but engineering maintenance and regular cleaning of the tanks make it impractical at this time. 2. Chicago Plant - high priority Super G to convert to asbestos free. John Wilton is to get together with A. Santighian or R. Ozurilla to run a trial test of EP 5492 for Republic-Chicago. By next Wednesday (6/26) John Wilton to get with R. Dzurilla to use PVAC in EP 39820 instead of PF resin. Bill Vandemark asked what the problem is with the Super G machine. R. Dzurilla replied: 1. Distribution of slurry 2. Cracking It was also stated that these can be cleared via tooling and a high pressure water spray. Arsen mentioned the use of Borax in our Profax recipes. When used, tests indicated that the boards were virtually free of all dust. However, Don Marino stated that Borax is on strict allocation and the material would be almost . impossible to obtain in the quantities that would be needed. Arsen to try some more investigative work. \ Effective September 1st, both asbestos and Wollastonite will have price increases which will cost us approximately $7,500/month for each.
