Dear Dr. Pepper}
The extensive work of your group in the investigation and develop ment of mosquito larvaeides and repellents suggests that you may still have a very active interest in these problems,
Monsanto has for several years been producing a series of biphenyls of different degrees of chlorination. These compounds find Industrial uee principally in laquer, paint and varnish. These Aroclors also possess distinct lnseotioidal properties, and would be useful mitloldes if they were not phytotoxlo at killing oonoentratlons.
The U.S.D.A. tested a group of the Aroolors at Orlando (U.S.D.A. Series K Bulletin 733*45-46) and found Acme of those in a oertain range of ohlorlnatlon to be highly toxle to the larva.# of A, quadrimaoulatus. No further investigation or development of these Aroolors as mosquito larvaoldes has ooeurred.
The Aroolors are of relatively low toxlelty to wans blooded animals, insoluble in water but soluble in oosMon organio solvents, and are very stable chemically. The present oost is in the range of 17 to 20ff/pound, and they are readily available.
If you would be interested in preliminary tests with these compounds, we shall be g&M *o Mnd you samples of those whloh appear the most promising ana to cooperate if further work should be indicated.
Blnoerely yours
