Mr. G. M. 'Viilkening' Head Industrial-Hygiene &. Safety Administration Department . Bell Telephone Laboratories Murray Hill, New Jersey 07971
'Tear Hr. kilkening:
P Lease accept sy thinks for your letter of August 13th concerning the statement made by 3. 3. arodie et al., concerning the conversion of tetraethyllead to a carcinogenic compound. This was called to my attention recently by a member of the bibliographic staff of the Department. In my efforts to wind up my affairs in the Department and to get away on a much-needed vacation (on a trout stream in Montana, from which I have just returned), I neglected to do anything about, this, ana I am glad to chat you have reminded me.
I have no clue to the background of this remark, but I suspect that something in the literature (perhaps in a Prussian publication) was responsible. In any case, we.are trying to find out. I shall certainly follow these up and am considering hew best to do it.
?.s to ray retirement, it may interest you to knew that I am heading for Santiago, Chile for the next three months, as a consultant to the Pan American Health Organization through Jack Bloomfield. After that I hope to return, on some part-time basis, to the Laboratory, and to have a quiet corner, with freedom from other responsibilities, where I can gather together the material on lead, which we have been collecting for many years, for publication as a monograph.
ivith best regards.
Sincerely,
Hebert A. ICoh.ce, M.D.
