EURETINA presented a comment on the "European Commission staff working document on Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)". The aim is to highlight and motivate the
Irreplaceability of the PFAS currently used in vitreoretinal surgery, namely hexafluoroethane
(C2F6), octafluoropropane (C3F8), perfluoro-octane (PFO) and perfluodecalin (PFD), porfluorobutylpentanc (F4HS), porfluorohoxyloctanc (F6HS), and hoavy silicone oils: (HSO). Itis clearly stated that a ban of these compounds will result in an unmet clinical need due to the absence of effective alternative allowing the same quality of care. Aware of the severity of the issues associated with PFAS, `multiple initiatives will be taken to optimize their clinical use as well as disposal, and promote researches on alternative tamponade agents.
