Schwartz We have reviewed Mr. N, T. Drake's memo requesting the development of equilibrium data for the design of a water stripper for Pasadena. The results from such a study would also be useful to our design effort; however, the program should be amplified to include vinyl acetate. As we discussed on June 11, 1976, the problem at Flemington and Burlington may be slightly more complex than at Pasadena. Samples from tankage at Burlington contain both solids and periodic foam. Accordingly, a packed tower may not be satisfactory since it could plug; the use of a sieve tray column might be more appropiate. There is a 3-inch Oldershaw column available in the Process Development area. This could be readily transported to Flemington. (The unit was used during R&D work on BTC.) As an alternative, Mr. Schwartz has suggested the use of a carbon column to adsorb VCM from the wastewater streams. While solids and foam could be a problem, this technique could be attractive and should be evaluated. Carbon adsorption is used to remove low levels of organics in tertiary wastewater treatment.
