We do use asbestos in our diaphragm chlorine operation. If asbestos is not handled with care and people breathe the fibers in too large amounts, it can cause medical problems. Asbestos is known to cause two major types of diseases. The first, called "asbestosis", is caused by inhaling too many of the fibers of a certain size which the body cannot get rid of. If a quantity of these fibers are taken into the lungs, they wall off and cause a thickening or scarring of the membrane between the air sacs. This leads to symptoms of cough and shortness of breath because the transport of oxygen across the scarred membrane is more difficult. The second disease that can be caused by excessive asbestos is cancer and there are several forms. Broncb/ogenic (bronchial) cancer has occurred in people who worked in an asbestos contaminated atmosphere and who smoke. Those who don't smoke have not had this form of cancer at any greater rate than the general public, even though they worked for long periods in asbestos. Another form of cancer is mesothelioma which is a cancer of the covering of the lung (pleura). This cancer is very rare. Workers in heavy asbestos atmospheres do show an increased incidence of stomach, colon and rectiaa cancer. Asbestosis, once developed, does not have any effective treatment. Bronchiogenic cancer can be cured by surgery if caught early enough. The control of asbestos and the proper use of masks in our plant will eliminate the possibility of asbestos related illness. I strongly recommend the employee who smokes make every effort to stop for the benefit of their health. There is no question about the danger of tobacco.
