TO: MONSANTO SPRINGFIELD EMPLOYEES As you know since early 1976 Monsanto Company and NIOSH have been involved in an effort to study the incidence of cancer among former Springfield workers who were employees between 1950-1976. NIOSH has recently issued a preliminary report on 465 deaths which indicates that "occupational factors are suspected" as a potential cause of death. Monsanto has received and is reviewing this preliminary report. Monsanto meanwhile has conducted a study of 593 death certificates of employees who worked at Springfield between 1950-1976. Overall results of our study indicate to us that there appears to be no occupationally related health problem at Springfield. We have communicated this information to NIOSH (see attached letter) and will contact them following our analysis of their preliminary report. Our interest and Intent always has been and is to insure the health and safety of our employees. We are using that approach in guiding our actions in this study. JLS/5BN 10A3/77.
