Current sponsors are of the opinion that the University of Louisville program embodies some of the most important and practical research that could be undertaken, not only on vinyl chloride but also in the broad area of chemical carcinogenesis. You may observe in the enclosed transcripts that current and proposed research at the University of Louisville indicate that studies on vinyl chloride, while still important investiga tive areas, are only parts of a multidisciplinary approach to chemical carcinogenesis. This multidisciplinary approach is comprised of three areas: I. Cancer Control Program (Medical and Surveillance Systems) II. Applied Clinical Investigations (Detection and Prevention Systems) III. Basic Research (Pathogenesis of Carcinogens) The sponsors recognize that upon receiving the enclosed transcripts, you will have in hand a fairly complete report on the 1977-78 research program. They also recognize that although you did not fund this program, they are convinced that these research findings are so important to the future of carcino genesis research they should be brought to your attention with C r- 2- - the recommendation that you give consideration to the sponsor ship of the 1979-80 University of Louisville Research Program.
