FILE NAME: Trade Publications (TR) DATE: 1946 Dec DOC#: TR008 DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: Trade Journal Article - 17th National Exposition of Power & Mechanical Industry - Southern Power & Industry E C I M B E I t 2 - Technical advances, widely influencing ihe entire outlook for ihe production and use of industrial power, will be featured at the 17th National Exposition of Power and Mechanical '.En gineering. Returning once more to its traditional site in Grand Central Pairce, The Exposition will be held coincident with the annual m ee.h g of the American Society of Mechanical En gineers. D URING a h isto ry of alm ost 25 years, the National Exposi tion of Pow er and M echanical En gineering has become a strong in stitution, unique in a num ber of respects. Established shortly after the first W orld W ar, it then satis fied, and continues to fulfill a well recognized purpose in joining the general interests of consum ers of power and producers of pow er generating equipm ent. The ex ceptional facts associated w ith the Exposition are that it provides a forum for the exchange of techni cal and engineering inform ation concerning pow er problems, as well as a display of the m ost re cent advances in m ethods and equipm ent. Threefold influence The influence of the Exposition is threefold. F o rem o st and m ost obvious is its d irectly productive value in th e visual sim plification of questions concerning the com position, m odification, and m ain te nance of pow er plants and th e dis- tribution and use of pow er. In this aspect, it is a w orking dem onstra tion-display of special engineering equipm ent, having a substantial m erchandising flavor. The second potential of the Ex position is the aid rendered to the form ation of projections and plans, often running several years ahead of realization on new plants, reor ganizations, and b ette rm e n ts. It is, above all, an exposition for indus trial planners, including all proj ects w hich convert energy or ap ply pow er directly. Third, and in some ways most in flu en tial, is the v alue of the E x position as an educational medium, for it serves visitors, almost w ith out exception, as an institution w here specialists are enabled to discuss the work of specialists out side th eir own, often narrow fields; and inspect the fruits of th eir u n dertakings. Forum for Engineers Progress in m ethods, practice, and equipm ent design, as revealed by the exhibits, prom ise a consid erably greater advance all along the line th an has often been noted at these biennial displays because of the dual influence of innovations in w ar production and also the partial suspense of commercial ani m ation during the past decade. Many products at the Power Show will be entirely new, others are re vised to incorporate an improved selection of m aterials. New m eth ods of m anufacture have also en couraged design changes from the m otive of economy in a good many instances. The Exposition, as in past years, is prim arily a forum for the m anu facturers and users of power plant equipm ent-- fuel handling;; com bustion; the distribution, economiz ing; and utilization of hear; auxilaries; m easuring and recording in strum ents; controls, and even ap plications of pow er in a n um ber of classes of m achinery, especially that intended for the construction, upkeep, and overhauling o: power plants.
