EAST SAINT I ES IN O L O U 1S' I LLI N ' O I S January 27, 1944 Dr. obert . Kehoe medical Director Kettering Laboratories Cine innati, Ohio Dear Dr. Kehoe: Through the very good offices of Mr. G. A. Lofquist of the Ethyl Corporation in Chicago, we already feel rather indebited .to you, and of course, are very much depending upon your advice on our analysis. Cur situation is'that we purchased some property at Colchester, Illinois, and have established -a subsidiary plant there under the name of Colchester Processing Company, .at the present time v/e are installing a Soybean Oil extraction plant there, and. the natter of tanks for both the Solvent (-will use Methylene Chloride temporarily) and the oif from the beans, we now find is a matter of very serious moment, and ye feei* quite- indebted to Hr. Lofquist for steering us along the right lines, in this connection. At the time w a purchased tanks we didn't have the faintest idea as to the danger attend^#H^=fr-a pcfssibility of a tank having had Ethyl Gasoline in it at some previous time. At the present tine, we have two tanks at Colchester and we sent samples scrapped from the bottom of both of these tanks, to ^hoenix Chemical Labora tories, Chicago, Illinois, dshey came back very promptly with a report that one of the tanks was positive and one of the tanks negative. I then, had the boys at Colchester take an additional sample from the smaller, or negative tank,, and send same to you for further verification of Chicago's findings, and v?e now await your report in connection with same. and I presume report will be made direct to Colchester. In the mean time we are up against the proposition of finding another tank to re place ,the :one showing positive, and have located two tanks here in the St. Louis District, both claiming to have nothing but.a fuel oil record back of them, he are not content with this however, and have therefore mailed to you two-bottle samples taken from, the contents of these two tanks. One sample is marked Tank #3 and the other one Tank 5. ve certainly would appreciate it Dr. Kehoe more- than we can tell you, if you will give these samples your attention as promptly as possible. Time has become veryshort with us. In the beginning we could have, of course, bought new tanks but due to our dumbness as indicated above, v/e didn't and are now hoping to make the initial run .of this plant within the next two or three v-eeks. It takes 10 to 12 weeks to get a new tank, so at the present time we are up against using a second- KE 0 O1S75 7 L A t i O R A T O R | S I N C- Dr. Robert A. Kehoe if you would be kind enough to wire at our expense as soon as you have got a line on either or both of these tanks, because you can see from the above the matter is one of . the extreme importance to us. ' lie will be awfully glad indeed to pay any charges for this; service and would appre ciate you sending us a bill in connection with same. Thanking you in advance for your courtesy and attention, we are, Yours truly ULTRA-LIFE LABORATORIES, INC ;CAn drews/ML President 0 0 1S75 8
