Burnett Executive Director September 17, 1992 Dear Conference Delegate: Now that the first Tripartite Conference is history, it is time to review the presentations and discussions that took place from September 2-4 in Washington, D.C. Rather than add more words to those already spoken and written, I feel it preferable to attach for your consideration and possible action the speeches and meeting summaries that are the best documentation of our efforts. From the keynote address by Larry Thomas to the opening remarks by delegation leaders, to the regional overviews, to the key issues a lot of material was generated which can have tremendous value to our industry. The breakout sessions provided an opportunity to examine broad areas of interest in small groups and the summary session served to pull it all together for group consideration. Of course our luncheon speaker, Dr. Paul Portney, gave us much to think about in terms of public policy. In terms of future action steps there appear to be three major areas to be addressed... 1. Reverse the delisting trend for PVC in packaging and durable applications (suggested lead group Japan and Latin America) 2. Continue the development of the technical infrastructure such as recycling, incineration (including chemical recovery) and eco science such as lifecycle analysis (suggested group Europe) 3. Develop strategy, facilitate communications and coordinate issues management (suggested group North America) Please let me know your willingness to work in this way by November 1, so that we can plan accordingly. The "lead group" would take the primary responsibility for the action to be taken, but would solicit input and task group members as needed from all areas. Of course the real value of a meeting such as the Washington conference is the personal interaction between parties vitally concerned with the survival of our business. I am confident that much was accomplished in this worldwide exchange of views and that together we can prove that "global society is well served by a healthy PVC industry".
