CULPEPPER, M.D. ITEMS OF INTEREST - MEDICAL DIVISION Miller Bill Burf Culpepper met with Mike Goldberg, Counsel, House Education and Labor Subcommittee on Labor Standards, in his Washington office on Monday, July 18. The discussion centered around the Miller Bill and the definitions of asbestos-related disease to be used in the language of the Bill. The attendees were: Mike Goldberg Hans Weill, M.D., American Lung Association, American Thoracic Society Beatrice Bleicher, Washington Counsel Owens Illinois David Gray, Esq., Owens Illinois Lawrence Novey, Committee for Equitable Compensation (Non-Chapter 11 Asbestos Manufacturers) Donald Elisburg, AFL/CIO Thomas L. Sager, Du Pont Washington Office (Legal) Mike Goldberg used our definitions of asbestos disease as a talking point during the discussion with the group. He suggested another meeting after the House recess in August. I considered the meeting very productive and that we are much closer now to an agreement on the definitions of mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. I think we should continue the association for discussions with Goldberg. Physical Examinations Medical Division was scheduled as a last item on the agenda of the P&ERD meeting on July 29. The subject was a proposed change in accomplishing the physical examinations for some 2,000 employees not assigned to plant sites. We hope to obtain non-objections from the departments. Alcoholism Program - Interview Burf Culpepper was contacted by Scott Hubbard, reporter for The Morning News, Wilmington News-Journal. She had briefly talked DUP 0947988 DU 038987 gl-Tjygil 2 with Frank Lawlor concerning our alcoholism program and requested an interview with me. Her questions involved the philosophy of our program and the method used in the treatment centers we selected. The interview lasted about 7 or 8 minutes and Ms. Hubbard seemed satisfied with the responses. An article will be published in the Morning News featuring alcoholism treatment in this area.
