REPORT OF OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES AND ILLNESSES FULL YEAR 1984 INTRODUCTION This full-year 1984 "Report of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses" provides a measurement of safety performance for every Eaton Operation. Incidence rates for 1984 are compared to those recorded In 1903, as well as to the average incidence rates reported by employers engaged In similar work. CORPORATE PERFORMANCE There were a total of 2,384 recordable Injury or illness cases at Eaton In 1984 compared to 1,933 cases In 1983. While much of that Increase Is related to an 18% increase In total hours worked, our Incident rate also increased from 7.7 to 8.0. In addition, the 1984 Total Recordable Cases rate exceeded the average of all U. S. Manufacturers by 18%. On another scale, our Lost Workday Cases Increased from 738 in 1983 to 919 In 1984. Again, the difference Is not solely attributable to Increase in hours worked.. The Lost Workday Cases rate at Eaton jumped from 2.9 in 1983 to 3.1 in 1984, and we continued to exceed recently reported "all-manufacturing" averages by Although there continue to be individual examples of excellent safety performance within Eaton, 1984 must be recorded as a year In which our overall safety record worsened compared to our own performance in 1983, and continued to trail the standard established by the rest of manufacturing companies in the U.S. This unsatisfactory overall corporate performance is largely the result of a relative few operations with substantially higher rates. Incidence rates for 1984 are compared to those recorded In 1983, as well as to the average incidence rates reported by employers engaged in similar work. CORPORATE PERFORMANCE There were a total of 2,384 recordable Injury or Illness cases at Eaton In 1984 compared to 1,933 cases In 1983. While much of that Increase Is related to an 18% increase in total hours worked, our Incident rate also increased from 7.7 to 8.0. In addition, the 1984 Total Recordable Cases rate exceeded the average of all U. S. Manufacturers by 18%. On another scale, our Lost Workday Cases increased from 738 In 1983 to 919 in 1984. Again, the difference Is not solely attributable to increase in hours worked.. The Lost Workday Cases rate at Eaton jumped from 2.9 In 1983 to 3.1 in 1984, and we continued to exceed recently reported "all-manufacturing" averages by Although there continue to be Individual examples of excellent safety performance within Eaton, 1984 must be recorded as a year In which our overall safety record worsened compared to our own performance In 1983, and continued to trail the standard established by the rest of manufacturing companies In the U,S. This unsatisfactory overall corporate performance Is largely the result of a relative few operations with substantially higher rates.
