In order for you to obtain a better picture of CMA's overall environmental activities, I am enclosing a copy of the most recent annual report of the Environmental Management Committee and an organizational chart that shows staff assignments. This contact list includes all of the task groups and work groups organized under the new Environmental, Health, Safety and Operations Committee (EHSOC). This new committee combines all of the functions of the Environmental Management, Health and Safety, and the Engineering and Operations Committees. I have enclosed the charter for that new committee. While the EHSOC will evaluate and make some modifications to our issue communications efforts, and in our planning efforts, we do not expect any major changes in the task group/work group organization. As you know, CMA has developed several proactive programs, several of which are in the environmental area. These proactive efforts have now been included in the Responsible Care initiative. Under that initiative, we have adopted, as the Pollution Prevention Code of Management Practices, elements of policies on air quality, waste minimization, and release reduction. While based on existing policies and programs, the Code goes beyond the scope of existing policies/programs, as follows: o Good faith implementation of the Code is an obligation of CMA membership. Company implementation of the previous policies/programs was voluntary. o The scope of the Code includes all contaminants and pollutants released into the environment, and all hazardous and non-hazardous wastes generated. Each company will establish its own priorities for establishing reductions. A copy of the Pollution Prevention Code is attached. We seek active involvement in our advocacy efforts and Responsible Care initiative.
