R. M. Eichhorn Invention Letter No. 77-32 has been assigned to your letter of August 18, 1977, on Chrysotlle Asbestos as Voltage Stabilizer in Polyolefins. Please refer to this Invention Letter No. on all future correspondence on this subject. A. J. Cozzi/G. R. Obrien We're trying hard, as you know, to bring a voltage stabilized (treeing resistant) dielectric compound to market ----- within the next few months, if possible. Presently, the action is centered on the silane modified materials of IL-77-24. Functionally, asbestos appears to be at least as good - perhaps even a better voltage stabilizer than the silanic compounds, but its use raises some sharp questions about toxicology and the associated handling, customer acceptance and allied considerations. Secondarily, asbestos opacifies the composition -- and the clarity of pe dielectrics has been touted as an advantage; but this may not be a serious problem. In other words, this is good technology functionally, but it is not currently - for the reasons stated above - our first choice. However, if the presently preferred voltage stabilizer candidates do not make it, asbestos will almost certainly be earnestly re considered ----- by UCC and/or others including (or perhaps especially) those in other countries which may be less concerned with the toxicological or opacity aspects. Please plan to file in due course. A copy of Eichhorn's Project Report #559^ is enclosed. /vob CPU: 221, PC: 261, MKT: 223 CC: R. L. Boysen R. E. Byrne - N. F. A. J. Cozzi S. Gates/W. T. Higgins R. DATE: Contributors) R*M* Eichhorn ABSTRACT (point out novel features A utility) Bus.Area Nos. Opratns Met. File Group --------------------------------------- The use of "Calidria Asbestos", which is a special form of crysotile asbestos, as a filler in ethylene polymers and copolymers used as electrical insulation increases the resistance to failure by the mechanism called "treeing." "Calidria" has proved superior to all other dielectric minerals tested for this application and is probably at least as good as more commonly used organic liquids. Perhaps then we may publish to support our other voltage stabilizer formulations. REMARKS This technology will be very valuable and possibly used by UCC if distinctions are made between the toxicological hazards of the three varieties of asbestos because crysotile, or white, asbestos is the least hazardous. If not, there are other material suppliers who may decide to commercialize anyway. Patent Mgr. - V. Auerbach (2) Patent Counsel - A.J. Cozzl (2) "" - G.R. O'Brien Ass't Director - j.s. Nicholas Tech.
