Subject: Recommended Procedures for Brake Servicing
In my memo of November 16, 1976, in the l a s t paragraph 1 in d icated th at I would discuss recommended procedures for servicing a sb esto s dust during brake serv icin g w ith Mr. Weaver, acting Chairman of t h i s Committee. I have sin c e reviewed t h i s question with him.
As a b r ie f background, I had e a r lie r been contacted by MOTOR Magazine and S ta te Farm Insurance concerning work p ra c tic e s in brake re lin e shops. Also, ASIA (Automotive Service In d u stries A ssociation) would be pleased to cooperate in supporting FMSi recommendations for se rv ic in g brake linings.
I had e a r lie r s o l i c i t e d the views of committee members. I received input f r c.a Mr. PujI Lee ar.d Mr. Ike Wucver : f Rzybe'tn s. Both concurred tha+ the a ttac h ed Reconxnended Procedures for Reducing Asbestos dust during Brake Servicing was th e b est a v a ila b le w rite-up.
In recen t discussion w ith Mr. Weaver, he suggested th a t I b a llo t th e Asbestos Study Committee on recommending to the Board o f D irectors th e inclusion of such a w rite-up a s a page of our Automotive Data Book (red book) and our Brake Shoe Id e n tific a tio n Catalog (blue book). It is f e l t th a t such a w rite up would a le r t brake service personnel to good procedures in th e ir shops. F u rth er, i t would help brake lin in g (and c lu tc h facing) su p p lie rs defend a g ain st a lle g a tio n s th a t they did not n o tify users on th e p o ssib le hazards of asbestos exposure.
I am asking th a t you review th e enclosed b a llo t and re tu rn to me in the enclosed return envelope. Sim ilar action w ill be taken by th e Data Book and Technical Committee.
