STUDIES, SURVEYS & REPOSTS Texaco USA Eagle Point Plant Area Asbestos Sampling
Mr. R. J. Fischbach Wesfcvllle, New Jersey
Please find attached a report of industrial hygiene sampling for asbestos fibers conducted at the storehouse gasket storage area on February 5, 1982, by Mr. J. E. Schlicht. No exposures exceeded current regulatory or recommended standards. Recommendations are discussed herein concerning bagging of asbestos containing gaskets and storage area -cleanup.

I. SUMMARY
Area sampling was performed to characterize airborne asbestos fiber concentrations in the Eagle Point Plant storehouse. The storehouse contains gaskets made of asbestos. The monitoring results show that no airborne levels exceeded current regulatory or recommended standards. Recommendations are discussed herein.
IX. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Area monitoring for airborne asbestos fibers was performed at the north and south ends of the east wall of the storehouse gasket storage area, and the results are listed in the attached Table I. The eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) determinations were performed with calibrated Bendix 44 high flow pumps and mixed cellulose ester filter cassettes. Subsequent- analysis was performed by NATL5C0`s Environmental Sciences Laboratory which is an accredited facility.
Both determinations for airborne asbestos showed concentrations below the limit of detection, less than 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter <f/cc). These determinations are representative of potential employe exposures in the storehouse gasket storage area. However, the employes spend very little time in this area during their work shift. Therefore, based upon the above, it appears that there is little potential for exposure.

'RECOMMEN' DATIOl.Nl I.WSIF
A. Pursuant to a previous report, the gasket supplier now delivers the gaskets in sealed plastic bags to prevent the dispersion of asbestos fibers into the work environment. The gaskets that were delivered without bags are being scheduled for bagging by the Building Trades Department. Such practices should continue to prevent introduction of asbestos fibers in the workplace. During the bagging procedure, employes should wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as the 3-M 9900 or 8710 disposable respirators and coveralls to prevent asbestos
. exposure.
B. Upon completion of bagging the gaskets, the storage
area should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any
' asbestos fibers that may have been introduced. A
vacuum can be employed to clean the area and to
prevent asbestos fibers from becoming airborne, and
the debris should be put in plastic bags displaying
. the appropriate labels. Employes performing the
clean-up should wear appropriate personal protective
equipment.
,.
C. Enclosed is an extra copy of the monitoring results that may be posted in the storehouse to notify employes of airborne asbestos concentrations in the gasket storage area.
