This is the inspection report for the Smurfit berm for 5/10. NewField's will be inspecting the berm today and tomorrow. They will inspect it on Sunday if the water flow does not go down. I will be talking with NewField's on a regular bases throughout the flooding. I have sent this information to Missoula City-County Water Quality District. Travis Ross from the Missoula Water Quality District has my cell phone number. If you need to talk to me, my cell phone number is j____Ex. 6____ j Thanks Sara

Hi Joe,
This is very helpful. Thank you for continuing to send updates through the weekend when the Clark Fork is expected to crest around Missoula. We may want to communicate this information to the local media and to Smurfit stone CAG members.
Thanks,

Hi, Betsy:
The EPA Remedial Project Manager, Sara Sparks (406) 782-7415, is in direct contact with the consultant for the
potentially responsible parties at the Smurfit-Stone Mill site, NewFields Consulting. NewFields has an engineer on site
inspecting the berms on a daily basis. His contact information is:
David Tooke dfooke@newfselds.com
NewFields | Missoula, MT | c
L Ex . I
NewFields has recently conducted a berm stability evaluation that is complete except for the LIDAR data. Sampling of
the berm materials shows the berm to be constructed of "clean" materials. The former cooling ponds behind the berm
are empty. There may be approximately 6 inches of sediment in the bottom of the ponds. Recent sampling of the pond
sediment shows levels of arsenic, manganese, and dioxins at low concentrations but above background.
The current flow in the Clark Fork River is at 42,700 cubic feet per second today (USGS Station 12353000). On May 18, 1997, the flow was recorded at approximately 55,000 cubic feet per second, and the water was still 8-10 feet below the top of the berms at that time. The EPA Remedial Project Manager was on site Tuesday and observed the water level well below the top of the berms. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you require additional information. We will send updates as they are available.
Thank you,
Joe

Hi Dave and Andrew,
What is our plan to monitor the berms outside the Smurfit stone holding bonds in Frenchtown, MT and how are we communicating that plan to the public and elected officials?
