'' 1 e` i* > Employees of Allied Insulating Service were involved in the removal of asbestos containing insulation from Tank 4621 during July 10 and 11 of this year. The material was old block KAYLO which was partially water saturated from breaks in the protective cover and the employees used reasonable care in wetting the sidewall material prior to the removal process. This job was generally performed according to the prescribed standards in that adequate wetting was ensured, signs were in place, area was marked with barricade tape and the employees wore 3M dust respirators. The current threshold limit value (TLV) for asbestos is 2 fibers per ml of air and when proper care is not taken the TLV will most likely be exceeded. The following data indicates the amount of fibers which were airborne and subject to being inhaled had the employees not worn respirators. Although they would not have been overexposed they should be encouraged to wear the respirators under these conditions because in addition to asbestos fibers there were also glass wool and other unidentified particulates.
