Histologic studies of renal tumors induced in rats by ingestion of large amounts of lead acetate fail to support the theory that lead toxicity may activate an oncogenic virus, Peter Mao, M. D., and John Molnar, M. D., Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, report. "We are un able to demonstrate any virus or virus-like particles in the tumors, " Dr. Mao told the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists in Cleveland. "It is possible, however, that the lead compound itself, in high doses, acts as a carcinogen by inhibiting or interfering with the normal synthetic or regulatory mechanism in the cell. " -- J. Am. Med. Assn. 195, 35 (March 28, 1966) 424 Leaded Gasoline. From a health point of view, lead needn't be eliminated from gasoline, according to Dr. Joseph C. Calandra, president of Industrial Bio-Test Laboratories. Emissions of lead from auto ex hausts aren't creating a public health hazard. In fact, lead concentrations in the air from all sources are low--far below levels known to be safe for industrial workers, Dr. Calandra told the Lead Industries Association, meeting in St. Louis. Levels of lead in the air have been found to be very much lower than those considered safe for an occupational exposure of eight hours per day for a working lifetime. Dr. Calandra urges proper professional recognition of the large body of scientific data on lead toxicology until the completion of industry/government research pro grams that are gathering additional information on lead exposure. -- Chem.
