Boudreau Ethyl Corporation 100 Park Avenue New York 17, New York Dear Jim: I return this draft of an article for Ethyl News with my approval and commendation, except for one serious bit of misinterpretation beginning at the bottom of page 7 and extending into page 8. Mr. Cook did not read what I said about the handling of gasoline, or else he confused it with the handling of the concentrated fluid. Unfortunately this has been done by many other people. The safety of leaded gasoline is built into the product, and had this not been the case, it could never have been distributed for longer than the brief period required to demonstrate the facts in the matter. I have explained this in some detail in the text of the article. We could never have surrounded the gasoline with "elaborate safety precautions" if we had tried. This statement, therefore, is directed toward the wrong point. The "elaborate precautions" relate to the remarkably effective precautionary measures which the Corporation developed and applied to the manufacture of Ethyl Antiknock Compounds, to the transportation of these compounds, and to their admixture with gasoline. Ethyl people should not allow themselves or others within their influence ever to forget these essential matters. It took us ten years or more, at very considerable cost, to clarify this matter in the courts of the USA, and in health departments here and abroad. Let us not confuse the issue, ourselves. I have modified the last sentence of Mr. Cook's article also, because it is not quite correct, or at least is not entirely clear.
