The industrial hygiene field monitoring included paint solvent sampling, asbestos monitoring and welding fame samples Paint solvent monitoring consisted of n-butanol sampling with 3M #3500 organic vapor monitors Dupont P-2500 and P-4000 personal pumps and MCE filter cassettes (3-piece for asbestos) were used for the asbestos and welding fume sampling* All equipment was calibrated prior to .the monitoring period and was found in calibration following use. y-Bntanol Four personnel samples were taken in the painting areas. No values were greater than the,-limits of detection. Although*no airborne exposure to n-butanol was* noted, cate should be taken to eliminate skin contact since this may be the most common route of exposure* Asbstos . Four personnel samples and one ara. sample were taken in the valve assembly area. No values greater than the limits of detection. Welding Fumes * -* Five personnel samples and two area samples were taken on the first and second shifts in the welding shop. ICAP analysis was performed and no values exceeded TLV*s or GSHA PEL'S with one exception. A single cobalt sample appeared to be above the TLV. However, an area sample taken at the same time or a second personnel sample on the following day did not parallel these results. Due to this result and the fact that stellite contains cobalt it is recommended that additional samples be taken to de termine if this level is, in fact, real. It is important that ventila tion be provided in this area, as previously recommended (memo TLB to NJW 5/13/85), no matter what the outcome of additional sampling.
