Smith AVON LAKE CANCER CASE Marie Schmiederer called this morning with the following report: Dr. Groppe of the Cleveland Clinic called Dr. Nepomuceno,plant physician at Avon Lake Tuesday afternoon. Groppe said he has a woman patient with primary liver cancer, not angiosarcoma. He asked Nepomuceno if we (BFGoodrich) or he are aware of any excess liver cancer rates in the Avon Lake area. Nepomuceno told Groppe he is not aware of any excess rates and then he called Bob Montgomery in the Chemical Division personnel office. Nepomuceno did not know the patient's name. Ron Cross, Avon Lake Plant Personnel Manager, told Marie this morning that a Mrs. Gearing lives on Moore Road close to the plant and has frequently complained about fumes and odors from our operations. She is reported to have cancer. I advised Marie that this matter should be confined to the most careful professional and medical level and that the subject should not be discussed in any way which could lead to rumors or get to the media. I then called Dr. Guyton; Drs. Gold, Dietz and Johnson are out of town. Dr. Guyton will call Nepomuceno to learn details then will decide whether he should get in touch with Dr. Groppe to try to answer his questions. Incidentally we know of no community cancer studies in the Avon Lake area'except for the studies conducted by Dr. Peter Infante when he was with the state health department.
