The cleanup w i l l reduce p e o p le ' s exposure to high 1e v e ls o f contam inants and w i l l make i t s a f e r f o r al 1 but the most sensi t i v e people to e a t more f i sh from the r i v e r more o f t e n , and make i t s a fe f o r people to work and pi ay on the r i v e r banks and b each es. The f i nal cleanup pi a n , re le a s e d in Ja n u a ry 2017, re s u lte d from o ver 16 y e a rs o f i n te n s iv e stu d y and the in p u t EPA re c e iv e d from more than 5,000 p u b lic comments.
Under the cleanup pi a n , contami nated sedi ments a t the s i te w i l l be addressed through dredgi ng , cappi ng , enhanced n a tu ra l re c o v e ry , and moni to red n a tu ra l re c o v e ry . Approxi m a tely 394 a c re s o f sedi ment, out o f 2,190 t o t a l a c re s in the s i t e , w i l l be a c t i v e l y remedi ated wi th dredgi ng and cappi ng , i n clu d i ng removal o f o ver th re e m illio n cubi c y a rd s o f contami nated sedi m ents. Approxi m ately 1,774 a c re s o f the s i t e wi th 1ower contami nant 1e v e ls a re expected to re c o v e r n a tu ra l l y o ver t i me.
