A, Bender, G.W .Knight : Chicago, February 15, 1937 Referring further to the Occupational Disease Act, State of Illinois, effective October 1, 1936: I now wish to bring to your attention, and in addition am sending you herewith several copies of two sheets entitled - (1) Recommendations covering rules and instructions for the prevention of Silicosis. (2) Recommenuations covering rules and instructions to be observed by employees handling asbestos. With respect to the sheet setting forth recommenda tions covering rules and instructions for the prevention of Silicosis, I am also sending a copy thereof to all enginehouse and car foremen and others concerned receiving a copy of this letter for their information and guidance. it must be understood, however, that these recommenda tions are not to be posted or given out but are for the information of the supervision exclusively- and they will be expected to see that all of our employees involved in the particular work that might cause Silicosis be properly instructed and supervised so that none of our employees assigned to the work enumerated will develop Sileosris. Likewise, I am sending each of the foremen addressed a copy of the sheet setting forth recommendations covering rules and instruc tions to be observed by employees handling asbestos, and similarly this sheet is not to be posted or given out but is for the information of the supervision who will see that the employees wear respirators while perform ing the work enumerated therein and in accordance with instructions contained therein, These are two very important subjects, namely prevention of Silicosis and prevention of injurious effects from handling asbestos, and I will expect you gentlemen to personally handle the matter with your supervision while visiting the various terminals to know that they thoroughly understand the instructions and recommendations and that they see to it that the employees are properly supervised while performing the work enumerated in both of these recommendations.
