Dear Fallxt You say recall our conversation In your offlc* when w were discussing the formulas for pure whit* load prepared paint In which 1 expressed misgiving about the low content of < pigment In aone of these paints. Further consideration of the subject leads b * to write you about It because I feel 1 sure that there are serious dangers In the situation about which you should Inquire very carefully. You know that we have long emphasised certain Impor tant advantages of pure white lead paint that cosmend It strongly to many paint users. . Two of these advantages are B ! particularly pertinent to this discussion: (1) white lead paint. In the form of aoft paste. Is practically a standard ized product In to* sense that, though sold under s nunher of traoe brands, it has essentially the sane composition regard less of brand. As a result It Is the only whit* paint that .. nontechnical person* can buy with full assurance that they are getting a product of best quality. A further result Is that recognized standards of proper use of white lead pslnt have ben developed so tnat disinterested organisations such as the lusher associations, the bureau of Standards, and this labora tory can tell the public in simple language how to us* whit* lead correctly. (!) Because of the uniformly high quality of paste white lead as well as certain of Its technical merits, the outstanding characteristic of pure white lead paint has been reliability. Wlth.no other paint can the user tell be forehand "just what service he can exp*et and with no other ? paint Is there so llttla danger of falling to get the expected service. If by promoting the sale of the new prepared white lead paints these two outstanding advantages of pur* whit* lead paint should be destroyed or eertously Impaired I as afraid that the whit# lead producer* will lose far *or# than they can #p-et to gain from Interesting the smaller paint manufacturers In the sal* of prepared white lead paints. Furthensore, If the fin# reputation earned In the past by paste white lead Is destroyed, I feel sure that the present Interest In prepared white lead paints will prove short lived. Personally I think that the former T ' course cusi be taken If the two great merits of vbite lead ] pelnt that I have mentioned are to be maintained. On th* other hind, If the latter course Is decided upon, Z think that It would prove eery much better In th* long run to cheapen the oalnt by adding barytes, magnesium silicate, or sorething of that kind so that the plgnent content could be kept high and, further, so that th* buyer would be less likely to misunderstand the quality of the product he is buying. Ho doubt I have selected one of th* least satisfactory * of the new prepared white lead paints at ay example. The for- ault of the or* cad* by Hooker, however. Is not much better.
