Locher Ethyl Corporation 100 Park Avenue New York City 17 Dear Ellis ; I send you herewith two reprints of an article published recently, which vili serve to illustrate methods and results in relation to lead and other particulate materials in the atmosphere. Incidentally a letter from Talph Champ1in on this same subject has resulted in ay sending him some material. You and ho should coordinate your efforts in this matter, ae I assume you have done, since to his letter was attached a memo from Ball, copy of which vent to you. There is one thing in Ball's memo which deserves your immediate attention. Please see that he and all of the other persons involved {other safety personnel) are brought to an awareness of the fact that the Lead-in-Air Analyse is of no valuewhatsoever in carrying out determinations for the presenee of lead as it occurs in the ambient atmosphere cf cities , garages, etc. These particles are too small for efficient collaction by this means. The use of the instrument for this purpose should not. be: advocated "by-Ethyl personnel, since otherwise they will be regarded as unduly naive by persons who know better.
