Reed This memo will document discussions between Richard Owen, President, Lamons Gasket Company, Houston, Texas and myself, on 4/17/86, relative to the identification program for the 5,000 PSI "Y" Factor (Minimum Design Seating Stress) special Bpiral wound gaskets. Such discussions were undertaken while you were not available for inclusion. Field reports received from the MHBA unit during the current MMP shutdown have indicated that these gaskets, as received from Lamons, have no special identification as to being of the 5,000 PSI variety. Mention was made to Mr. Owens, during my conversation with him, that we needed a minimum of two special Identifying features for these gaskets; namely, (1) The stenciling of "5,000" on the face of the outer containment ring and (2) The addition of a second color strip (sky blue), to augment the 4 gray color stripes currently used for the flexible graphite filler identification. Additionally, some consideration has been given, locally, to adding a third level of identification; namely, the addition of four equally spaced, filed notches, to be located on the outer rim of the containment ring. This additional means of providing for identification would remain available, even if the paint color code were to be lost, due to acid washing for Ph control. However, this additional feature has not been adopted as of this time, since it is yet to be decided if this "filing" is to be done "locally", or, "at the factory". As soon as this consideration is resolved, as to cost considerations, it will then, also be included in the identification program. Relative to the previously mentioned MHBA shutdown, all unmarked special 5,000 PSI Lamnons Gaskets installed during the present MMP shutdown will be left in place, as they were installed. However, the spiral wound special 5,000 PSI gaskets that have already been received from Lamons for installation during the upcoming phases 3 and 4 of the MMP project, can be properly marked for identification purposes by Lamons, at their location, or at our plant site, depending upon our preference. Lamons would appreciate hearing from us, as to our intentions on this remaining item. Finally, it would be desirable, if all potential suppliers of this special 5,000 PSI gasket could be notified of our Identification requirements, if they are selected for any supplying of this gasket, either as a primary supplier or as an alternate, secondary supplier.
