Beatty DATE April U, 1950 s u b je c t LEAD IN ENGINE EXHAUST GAS File Ref: II4O.IOIO 20 113.29 6O.5026 As an appendix to my memorandum of March 20, I'd like to report that we have finally located In our files here copies of Dr. Edgar's progress reports covering the work he did on the subject at Dayton in 1925. That work was done with a Delco engine in the laboratory and a Chevrolet car on the road, passing all or part of the exhaust in series through a condenser, trap, and Cottrell precipitator. Of the lead input during over 5000 miles of the road test, only 0.1$ was recovered in the trap and 13% in the precipitator, indicating that practically all the lead which left the muffler was in very finely divided form. It seems likely that the precipitator failed to retain all the particles. There was no analysis other than for total lead, and no measurement for particle size. HAB:hk cc: G. Edgar G. Calingaert W.
