Dr. William West Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology Howard University Washington, D.C. 20059 June 29, 1976 Dear Dr. West: At the request of my collgue, Dr. Sperling, I am sending you the following information. I aman environmental toxicologist with spcial interests in the human body burden of trace metals and industrial toxicology. As you can see from the attached resume, I have spent most of the last 9 years at the Department of Environmental Health (The Kettering Laboratory) of the University of Cincinnati. While at Kettering, I developed a close association with Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., Professor Emeritus and founder of the Kettering Laboratory. He is internationally prominant in the study of the health aspects of lead exposure in humans and other occupational and environmental health matters. My research in human body burden analyses were originated by Dr. Kehoe. These studies (see resume) are not only important to occupa tional and environmental health but will prove important to our understanding of the intereaction of essential and contaminant metals and to some aspects of the aging processes in humans. Two years ago Dr. Kehoe honored me by giving to me the opportunity to complete the data processing on his lead balance studies in humans (see resume). These studies, carried out over a 35-year period (beginning in 1937)> represent 21,000 days of carefully measured oral and inhalation exposures to lead in 18 subjects. These studies are also unique because of the data obtained and their importance to our understanding of the physiology of lead exposures in many types of human activity. I had a one-year contract (197^-1975) to analyze Dr. Kehoe*s data and currently have a four-month contract to complete the first phase of these analyses. The latter contract was received while employed at the Hazleton Laboratories America at Vienna, Virginia. I joined Hazleton to gain more experience in inhalation toxicology and to develop their capability in indus trial toxicology. 00 Cv? I am committed to completing the analyses of Dr. Kehoe*s data, but I find the setting at Hazleton not conducive for this. With Dr. Kehoe*s financial OOO help, I am seeking an academic position in which to complete his project and to develop a program in occupational and environmental health. I have asked Dr. Kehoe for and will receive thirty thousand dollars ($30>000) over a twoyear period to be used for salary and/or research costs. If necessary, I U4 X will accept a two-year temporary appointment (such as a visiting professor in occupational and environmental health), but I would expect the two-year period to be used to eventually establish me in a tenureable faculty tract. I am dedicated to quality teaching and would expect to be involved with this. If necessary on an interim basis, I can teach graduate and undergraduate biochemistry (including nutrition and aging) and information science. I \have included an outline of my Introduction to Toxicology, developed at the University of Cincinnati. This was a required course in the Department and served several of our graduate training programs including toxicology, occu pational medicine, industrial hygiene (made up primarily of physical scientists) air and water, pollution, and environmental- health students. There was also a considerable: interest in this course from studehts of other departments of the University of Cincinnati. I have been quite successful in obtaining outside funding (both govern mental and industrial) for my research activities (see resume). I expect to readily obtain Contract funding for my toxicology research interests. Grant money should be available to continue my research in body burden analyses. I expect that all of my future research efforts will be done primarily by students tinder my direct supervision. I would like the opportunity to present in more detail my research and teaching aspirations for the University and to discuss them with the appro priate University officials. Since I would like to relocate this fall, I would appreciate the opportunity to explore this matter as soon as possible.
