I visited Mr. Jenkins, Standards Engineer at Stanlow, on Wednesday 9th August, It appears that he works on his own in the Standards Section and, therefore, owing to pressure of work generally follows Haven and Carrington policy as a matter of course. He has specific instructions from h i 3 medical officer to find alternatives to asbestos cloth, lagging and millboard but is not worried about packings and jointings. V/hilst he is firmly of the opinion that they could continue to use these materials, taking adequate precautions, he obviously cannot over-rule the medical officer and pointed out that as the various Unions are now involved in this matter continued use of asbestos materials giving off asbestos dust when handled could result in a claim for danger money. Mr. Jenkins suggested that any attempt by T.3.A. to counteract the c hange from asbestos cloth, larrrinir and millpoard should be made at Shell success there would quickly be"Tollov;eT~5y~rsRTj^tgton--- and Stanlow. He also informed me that a conference will short1 be held at The Hague during which two papers are being " presented, by Haven and Carrington, on the use of asbestos materials and suitable alternatives but he Cont 'd 2 could not (would not?) tell me precisely when the conference is to be held, or who had prepared the papers. You may already have had this information from Shell - Haven.
