Vice President Timmermans and Commissioner Sinkevicius have asked me to reply to you. In line with the EU's Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability towards a non-toxic environment, the Commission is currently assessing the best options to further increase the level of protection against the adverse effects of chemicals on health and the environment. This includes options to improve the communication in the supply chain. Therefore, we welcome your views on this aspect, which are enriching the discussion. Safety Data Sheets are indeed one of the most important tools to use in the communication of information on chemicals in the supply chain. They have been developed with a particular purpose in mind, namely to provide the most important information for the safe use, storage and disposal as well as relevant emergency response measures. The content and scope of Safety Data Sheets have been agreed internationally in the United Nations' Globally Harmonised System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. While transparency in the supply chain is important, it needs to be ensured in a way that does not undermine the core objectives of a Safety Data Sheet to be comprehensive and easy to understand.
