SPECIFICATIONS -- BESTWALL HUMMER SYSTEM "B"
GENERAL NOTES
Study room layout to make maximum use of boards 4' wide to determine corner and wall intersections, door openings, location of electrical outlets, necessary temporary bracing, and the order of installation.
The layout of the partitions, installation of floor and ceiling runners, setting of door frames, hanging doors, trimming (including openings, floor and ceiling) mentioned in the following specifica tions and shown on the detail sheets are generally included in the carpentry specifications.
Where ceilings are to be installed, it is suggested that Bestwall Hummer Sys tem "A" or "D" be followed. Where acoustical treatment or other ceiling construction is desired, the owner and architect should make the specifica tions for the particular installation re quired.
The Bestwall Hummer System "B" may be used in existing buildings regardless of the ceiling construction. Suggested details show how to treat various con ditions. DO NOT DIMPLE BOARD for nails, screws or fastenings installed under Joint Treatment or trim. Screws should be drawn tight so that heads are approximately 1/32" below the surface of panel.
SCOPE
This contract shall cover all labor, mate rial and equipment necessary to erect all gypsum board including joint finish ing for partitions and self-furring walls as described in the following specifica tions and detailed plans. All partitions and self-furring walls shall be true and plumb. All work must be performed by mechanics skilled in their trade and work left in satisfactory condition for decorating.
MATERIALS
1. %" Firestop Bestwall Tapered Edge Gypsum Wallboard.
2. Gypsum Wallboard Studs, Factory Laminated (or on job).
3. 1*4", 1V2" and 2" No. 14 Phillips flat head wood screws. (American Screw Company, Chicago, III. or equal).
4. Nails, rawl type drives, screws, etc., as shown in details.
5. Bestwall Joint System Materials including Laminating Compound, Cement, Bedding Compound, Top ping Compound, Tape, and Certex Texture.
6. Metal and/or wood, door frames, runners, trim, caps, etc., as per details.
PANEL ASSEMBLY
Assemble one half of the laminated wall panel, using three 2" x 4"s as a base for the assembly with a y8" wedge to form crown (do not exceed Vs").
Bestwall Laminating Compound shall be mixed to such a consistency that the combed ridges will not self level when the board is in a vertical position (use approximately 2% pounds per 1 gallon of water). Apply the laminating compound to ribs with a glue box spreader as shown on manufacturer's detail drawing.
Place the ribs as indicated using gauge blocks to space ribs properly. The un coated 23/4" of one rib must extend over the long side of the wallboard. Finished panels should be stacked and weighted down with bundles of board or other suitable weight and left for at least 12 hours before installing.
Do not leave a stack or a panel more than 10 minutes without weighting it down, nor remove panels from stack until they are to be placed in the posi tion.
CONSTRUCTION
a. General Preparation
Floor runners shall be laid out on the floor. Where there is a wood sub-floor, the runnershall be nailed in place with a lOd nail;on concrete floors, the wood runner shall be pre-drilled and concrete nails used or screws with plugs or shields set in the floor not to exceed 24" o.c. Where partitions extend to the ceil ing, the ceiling runner shall be plumbed up over the floor runner and fastened in place. (For metal runners use short concrete nails in flanges).
Where one piece door frames are used they shall be set in place and braced. Other type doors shall be located and all openings noted.
NOTE: Where partitions run parallel with overhead joists, 2" x 4" nailers 24" o.c. shall be installed between joists with the face of nailers in the same plane as bottom of joists. The ceiling run ner shall be securely attached to these nailers.
b. Erecting First Side of Partition (Panels with Ribs Attached)
Apply Bestwall Laminating Com pound with the box type comb spreader to the overlapping edge or strip. Set panel in position on wood wedges and nail to the ceiling and floor runners with 1%" Bestwall Hummer Annular ring nails spaced 5" to 7" on center within %" of the ceiling. DO NOT DIMPLE BOARD for nail head at these points. With metal runners use \xh" long No. 14 Phillips flat head.wood screws 12" on center.
Reinforce joint between panels by installing 1W long Phillips flat head wood screws in the taper, %" from edge of board, 12" from ceiling or floor spacing screws 24" o.c. Use countersink with pin before set ting screws. Draw head of screws about 1/32" below surface.
c. Erecting Second Side of Partition (Panels without Ribs Attached)
Bow Board as shown. Apply strips of Bestwall Laminating Compound to back of face board with box type comb spreader where board comes in contact with laminated ribs in place (Laminating Compound may be applied to ribs in place). Place faceboard on wood wedges and nail at top and bottom in the same manner as the first side. The edges in the second sheet shall be offset so that the vertical joints in the finished wall do not fall over the joint in other face board.
After two of the second face panels are in place, reinforce the joints by installing iy2" Phillips flat head wood screws in the joint, 12" from ceiling or floor, spacing screws 24" o.c.
d. Door Openings
Fill in rib space around door and other openings in the wall with a 3V2" rib covered on both sides with laminating compound. Drive wood clamps in place immediately and allow at least 12 hours setting time. After clamps are removed, the door (hang door and trim one side on bench) and jambs shall be set in openings and trimmed,* and the base and ceiling moulding nailed in place. 1" x 15g" wood may be used for core space filler. 6%" ribs shall be used for doors weighing 100 pounds or more.
Metal door frames if delivered to job sites, knocked down, shall be set after the walls are in place and the core space filled. Shims coated with fast setting mastic shall be inserted around the metal frame, as shown, to wedge it tightly in place. Use joint cement to fill be tween frame and board.
e. Self Furring Walls
No-drip shims keep Gypsum board panels from contact with exterior masonry walls, nail to panel ribs.
ELECTRICAL WORK
All electric work will be under the electrical sub-contract.
Thin wall conduit can be installed after
the first side of the partition is in place,
and run in the rib space vertically and
along the top and bottom of the panels
in the space left by holding the rib
strips back from panel ends. For rigid
conduit requiring
space, 2 strips
%" board should be used. This will re
sult in a 2W thick wall. Runners, door
frames, and trim should be specified
accordingly. The opposite side of the
panel is set in place after the conduit
is installed.
Flexible conduit can be installed in the completed wall from the floor or the ceiling in the 1" rib space or may be
installed as the panels are erected.
Shallow type outlet and switch boxes can be installed as detailed. The panel
must be cut clean and neatly to receive the box.
FIRE RATED WALLS, 1, 2, and 3 HOURS
(NON-LOAD BEARING)
The 2(4" wall described above with cer tain additional mechanical fastenings (closer spacing) is listed by Under writers' Laboratories as 1 Hour Fire Resistive (see Bestwall detail plan sheet No. 5583--"Firestop Bestwall Gypsum Wallboard -- One Hour Non-load Bear ing Studless Wall").
Adding one additional layer of %" board on each side of the partition results in a wall 4" thick which is listed by Underwriters' Laboratories as 2 Hour Fire Resistive (see detail plan sheet No. 5584--"Firestop Bestwall Gypsum --2 Hour Non-load Bearing Studless Wall").
Separating the two double layer faces by an additional inch making a wall 5" thick gives a wall section listed by Underwriters' Laboratories as 3 Hour Fire Resistive (see Bestwall detail plan
sheet No. 5585 -- "Firestop Bestwall Gypsum--Three Hour Non-load Bearing Studless Wall").
JOINT TREATMENT
Apply Bestwall Bedding Compound or Bestwall Joint System Cement to the Taper Edge joints and screw heads. Shear off surplus, leaving no material on high edges. Allow 12 hours drying before taping, leaving a uniform depth of taper for uniform shrinkage of joint finishes over and under tapes.
Apply Bestwall Bedding Compound or Joint System Cement and embed tape leaving a uniform thickness of material under the tape.
When Bedding Compound or Joint Sys tem Cement has whitened (surface dry) cover taped joint with Bestwall Topping Compound. Shear off surplus leaving a uniform coverage over tape with edges well feathered.
The Bedding Compound or Joint Sys tem Cement under the tape and first coverage of tape with Topping Com pound must be thoroughly dry before further treatment.
Cover joints a second time with Top ping Compound. Shear off surplus leav ing a smooth, well feathered joint.
For best results and a more uniform suction over entire area, apply a skim coat of Joint System Cement or Top ping Compound over the entire surface and shear off tight in lieu of a third application of Topping Compound to joints only.
DECORATING
Decorating of finished walls to be done by others.
Where a skim coat has been used to finish the wallboard, a one coat paint application may be satisfactory. For best results use a prime coat over wallboard before final decoration.
