SCOPE 1.1 rhis standard presents the permissible asbestos dust exposure limits, methods of controlling a4w*to* dust ex posures, special OSHA requirements for removal of asbestos insulation. respiratory protective equipment, and method of sampling asbestos dust concentrations in the work area. It provides sufficient information to comply with OSHA and KPA regulations hut guidance from the Du Pont Legal Dept should be sought whenever an in* torprettve problem arise*. 1.2 An Asbestos Compliance Package ran In* obtained from The Occupational Environmental Control group of ESD. ReF(l) contains extensive-additional information. 2. GENERAL 2.1 Asbestosis and cancer are associated with exposure to asbestos. Historically, the incidence of these diseases Has been significantly higher among asbestos workers than among the grneral population. Cigarette smoking greatly increases the inriilence of respiratory cancers from ex* posure to asbestos. Asbestos-exposed persons who smoke have s 90-fold increase in risk from lung cancer over non* smokers Ref (2). 2.4 material* t ontaming bound shImMii* fiber* are nut hazardous during nonnai use. Example* are: bonded i (impressed asbestos gaskets, asbestos roofing felt. Teflon' impregnated asbestos packing and fibrated asphalt cut back (mastic). These materials could become hazardous if asbestos fibers are released because of loss of hintler or s physical action such aa grinding. 2.5 A material which contains asbestos *hieh might la^'orne airborne should be treated as asbestos unless it is determined that the asbestos present is not a potential health hazard. Talc, vermicuiite, and other minerals are listed by Appendix I of Ref (1) as possibly containing asbestos. 3. Removing old asbestos-containing insulation from lines and vessel* b. Removal, handling, and laundering of aslx'stoa* contaminated clothing 3.1.2 By far the majority of al**tiM used for in* *ulation is the chrysotile form. Other forms of asbestos that have lower proposed exposure limits (ACOIH TLVs) are rarely used. For more complete information on these other limits refer to S2T Table 4. The OSHA permissible rxpmure limit listed in 1.1 is the *mne for .ill forms of asbestos. C Cutting asbestos cement (Transite) siding, roofing, pipe, etc, or Haveg pipe ami equipment d. Repair of laboratory equipment with asbestos insulated heatera (e.g., gas chromatographs, lab ovens) K Cleaning and maintenance of vacuum system* for culiedion of asbestos fibers 2.3 Suitable nonasbestoa substitutes should be sought for a#bettos<ontaininf materials whenever their use can result in a release of asbestos fibers. 4.
