Box 493 Pleasanton, CA 94566 VIS1A Dear Janine: Per our conversation, attached is a copy of toxicity testing done on CATAPAL Alumina, specifically the skin irritation study. I did give you some bad information in our conversation. The skin irritation was done with an "aqueous paste" of the alumina. Also, as you will see in the full report, no deaths occurred in the dermal toxicity testing which is the reason we have listed a LD zero on the MSDS. Sincerely, Thomas G. Grumbles, C.I.H. Grumbles August 9, 1988 CATAPAL ALUMINA-NOVEL USES VISTA I agree with the conclusion in your July 21 memo. In general we need to do a better job of determining the acceptability, from a regulatory or "standards" standpoint, of our new and existing products. We are attempting to make this type of end product use review a part of our new product development process. Jeff Fenton is R&D's representative on the team developing the procedures or process for new product development. You should discuss this type of need with him. In general, the questions are in two areas: 1) Regulatory or standard (NSF, UL, etc.) acceptability; and 2) Hazard evaluation. The first is a matter of giving consideration to what uses our products might go into and reviewing applicable governing statutes or codes. The second area involves developing appropriate toxicity data to assess potential hazards in specific end uses, such as skin contact. Testing needs must be part of the new product development process. Specific to alumina, I understand Michele is working with Diana Fenton to get answers on potable water applications. The skin cream application is probably a regulatory and hazard assessment issue. Please call me to discuss the potential toxicity data needs. Any other anticipated "novel" uses? T. G.
