COMPANY MAI PRODUCE TITANIUM IN NEVADA PLANT The Company has leased 80 acres of land with seven buildings totaling almost 200,000 square feet in area at the Henderson, Nevada site of Basic Magnesium Inc. and has contracted for power there With the Colorado River Commission of Nevada. Production of titanium metal with these facilities is under consideration, but no decision on immediate steps has been reached, a plant capable 01 turning out large tonnages of the metal involves a cost of fifteen to twenty million dollars. Such an operation also requires several hundred millions of kilowatt hours of power annually. Power allocations have already been made to the extent of 151 million kilowatt hours annually. Titanium metal has qualities of strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, ana heat resistance which make it potentially important in military equipment. Production in large volume, novever, depends upon creation of a large enough market at a relatively high price. PETERSON NAMED ASSISTANT TO SPECHT Edwin P. Peterson, formerly an assistant to the Company director of research, has been appointed an assistant to K. C. Specht in the Company's trade sales department. Kr. Peterson is a graduate of .the University of Colorado. He joined National Lead in 137 and had been in charge of paint and pigment research and development at tiie Brooklyn laboratories. Ralph Bennett continues as.an assistant to Mr. Specht. MOORE APPOINTED TO RESEARCH POSITION IN SaYREVILLE Dr. Charles H. Moore has been transferred to the Titanium Division research laboratories in Sayreville, New Jersey, where he will serve as assistant to Dr. R. Dahlstrom, technical director. Dr. Moore began his Company employment in 1945* He obtained his doctorate from Cornell University and was a professor at Pennsylvania State College before joining National Lead. 0000-NLI-000024831 MC Ca RTHY LEAVES COMPANY Fred McCarthy, manager of trade sales for the Company, has resigned to become general sales manager of the U. S. Gutta Percha Paint Company. Mr, McCarthy, who became manager of trade sales in New York in 1943, had been manager of the Cincinnati Branch since 1939. He came to the Company in 1935 from Proctor & Gamble as sales manager of the Cincinnati Branch, then was appointed assistant branch manager. DOW AND HOFFMAN APPOINTED TO NEW POSITIONS IN TITANIUM DIVISION . F. H. Dow has been named assistant to the manager of the Titanium Division. Mr. Dow started with the Company as a traveling auditor for General Office in 1921. In. 1923 he was transferred to the accounting staff of the Titanium. Pigment Company Inc. in Niagara Falls. He became comptroller of the Titanium Division and treasurer of the Titanium Pigment Corporation in 1936. A. H. Hoffman becomes comptroller of the Titanium Division. Mr. Huffman began his company career in 1921 as secretary to the plant superintendent in Niagara Falls, then joined the accounting department of the Titanium Pigment Company Inc. in 1923. He was transferred to the General Office accounting staff in 1930 and three years later moved to the Titanium Division, wnere he became assistant comptroller in 1936. - OVER - 2- - CARLTON H. HOSE HEADS 'WASHINGTON OFFICE Carlton H. Hose has been named manager of the Company's Washington, D. C., office. He had joined the Washington staff early last year. Mr. Rose was employed try the Company in 1924 as a technical representative of the Pacific Coast Branch. In 1932 he was#transferred to the Brooklyn research laboratories as a research chemist and subsequently became head of the pigment and paint department of the laboratories. He was appointed manager of the Company's specifications department in 1949 and will continue in this as well as his new capacity PODESTA APPOINTED TO NEW SALES POSITION IN ATLANTIC BRANCH Alfred F. Podesta has been appointed sales manager of tne Atlantic Branch, Metal Division. Mr. Podesta joined the Company in 1924 as a clerk in the metal sales and statistical department of the Atlantic Branch. In 1939 he was transferred to the blue lead sales department, where he remained until last year, wnen he was placed in charge of lined product sales. He spent two and one-half years in army ordnance during World War II. ADMIRAL JAMES JOINS WASHINGTON STAFF Admiral Jules James has been assigned to the Company's Washington, D. C., office, effective January 1. Admiral James has been working on special assignments in connection with certain of the Company's foreign interests since 1948.
