The minute3 of the last meeting were presented for reading. Motion by Mr.Rainey that reading be- omitted,seconded by Mr* Moody.So voted. 3- The Chairman stated that he'had received a letter from Mr. R.?. Clark, Uniroyal,Inc., dated September 3, 1969, tendering his resig nation as a member of the Board of Governors, also a3 Vice President of the Institute and the committees on which he served, to be effect ive 'as of Sept.1st,1969. His resignation, he explained, was due to a realignment of his duties at Uniroyal,Inc., because of which ha v;ould no longer be associated with their asbestos products. Mr. Rainey moved that the resignation be accepted with deep regret. Mis motion wa3 seconded by Mr. Moody. So voted. -'iuiman Schunan said that he had been advised by Uniroyal chat Mr. u.A. Morris would be their new representative on. the Board of Governors, and welcomed Mr. Morris to the meeting. Also welcomed to the meeting was Mr. J.K. I "nit taker, representana cur new Regular Member, Uicolst Industries,Inc. Id. The Vir.anoial Report was presented by Treasurer Sccwcroft, who s rated that the Annual Audit had been made by Mr. C.L. Briggs, Jr..* cf Raybestos-Kanhattan,Inc. President Behuman reported that he had beam advised by Mr. Briggs that the statement dated Sept.-,196''presents fairly the position of the Institute as of that date1'. Mr. v/hittalcer moved that report be accepted, motion seconded by Mr. Rainey, and so voted unanimously. The Report and a copy cf Mr. Briggs's letter are attached to these minutes. 5* Mr. L.2. Hr. hrnerran commented favorably on the makeup of the ads and felt it was a constructive effort to acquaint the public with the importance cf asbestos products in todayTs world. 13. hr. C.i. ShecViler, Chairman of the Ir.vircnr.ental Stud" Committee* reviewed for the benefit cf the Soard several developments that have taken olace since the last nesting. U1PII3 gives opinion, that asbestos hazard can be controlled except for nesothelina. Question of what Threshold Value should be established for asbestos reviewed. British Standards of number of fibers per cc (2 or 12 fibers per cc have been, suggested)-* compromise may be 9 fibers per cc which means one million particles per cubic foot. Does not know when US?HS paper will be published but thinks in about six months, possibly. In his opinion the asbestos industry should be defended by an association, rather ' than by an individual company. Hr. Shecklsr met recently with Dr. Selikoff, also representatives of respiratory safety equipment manufacturers, and representatives of the U. S. Bureau of hir.es. In respect to the ifavyfs search for a substitute for asbestos cloth as well as other asoestos products, hr. Cheekier is under the opinion that the k'avy does not necessarily want nor.-asbestos products, but elimination of dust i3 their primary objective. Sheckier raised the question of whether it would be desirable to have Dr. Sellkoff as the Guest Speaker at an A.?.I. meeting. Mr. Bair.ey felt that we should defer it as timing was not right* I was the concensus of the Board that any invitation to Dr. Selikoff should be deferred. Also that if, and when, invited to speak chat Dr. Selikoff acres there would be no oublicicT release with his talk at the Institute nesting, The question of preparing a Positi. ;r. asbestos was discuss hr. Rainey thought that the restructured former Sales Promotion Committee might undertake it. :.`r. Cheekier offered to help bus nor co accept responsibility for the undertaking, "he Position Paper, booklet, would be for the benefit of customers, and by means of it all companies would be in a position to advise their clients, cust ers,and the general public, of the many uses of and recommended procedures for the safe handling of asbestos ter.tile products. All agreed that such a booklet would be most desirable. Mr. Sheckl showed a booklet put out by NI;1A (hational Insulation, iifgrs. Assoc saying that the format was excellent, and that a booklet on asbe3t textiles might be modeled along the same lines. It was agreed that the idea of a booklet, or Position Paper, on asbestos textiles should be oursued at a subseauent meeting. lit* There being no further business to come before the meeting it was voted to adjourn.
