Winterization of Parathion Department to produce Methyl in cold weather continues. As of end of October, project is approximately 40% complete. Expenditures are in line with project estimate.
A preliminary estimate for debottlenecking of PNP by increasing production capacity 2.0M lbs./yr. was prepared for production.
Economic studies of residue recycle based on the latest PR&D work were initiated. This work will continue into November.
The automatic steam controller on No. 1_ Intermediate Still con tinued to function as designed. A profile for steam input was developed which saved 0.5 hour in cycle time.
Polyphenyls
All design and construction work on CEA 2472 Santowax R/Q refining facilities was suspended as of October 1 pending final approval of the appropriation. Work up until that time was proceeding on pre-approval appropriations.
The cumene injection system has been removed from the No. 1 Poly phenyl Tubular Unit. A project for a permanent facility will be forwarded for approval by mid-December. Design features will be incorporated to correct the problems encountered during operation of the test facility.
The CED proposed Biphenyl Still control system has been successfully
started up. The controls plus' replacement of the ten broken trays
has enabled the overhead product biphenyl to maintain its usual
high quality while suppressing the biphenyl content of the bottoms
(Santowax C) to below 0.5%.
.
A Partek Liqua-Blaster has been successfully tested as a means of cleaning the Polyphenyl Tube preheater tube bundles. A permanent unit will be purchased by the 'Maintenance Department to be used throughout the plant in cleaning fouled heat exchangers.

HB-40 Samples of. Santowax have been hydrogenated to 30%, 35% and 38% by PR&D as part of the WCM optimization study. The samples will be forwarded to St. Louis for an application testing study. Studies to determine the hydrogenation rates of HB-40 and WCM at 500 and 900 psi will begin immediately. EDC for this phase is 12-1-71. The Hydrogen Purification Unit was modified to increase recovery from 65 to 70%. Startup was successful and optimization is continuing. This work has delayed the third autoclave project scope until November. The liquid hydrogen trailer was removed from the plant in early October. Solid Aroclor Therminol FR-2 was removed from the Therminol heating system in the Solid Aroclor Department and replaced with chlorinated Santowax OM (OM-16). The changeover was successful with minor startup problems due to the high viscosity of cold OM-16. Plasticizers An evaluation is in progress for converting the old Aroclor tank farm into a plasticizer bulk handling and blending facility. Pollution Control Samples were collected and sent to an outside laboratory in preparation for com pleting the E.P.A. questionnaire. Quality Control The plant quality score was 90.9, up 1.8 from September, with a YTD score of 86.2. PCB in plant effluent showed marked improvement.
