I have supplied those: so designated in the U.S. Public Health Service, including the representatives of the group now collaborating in an investigation of the air borne lead in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Cincinnati (which includes Ethyl, du Pont, Cal. State Health Department, Philadelphia Health Department, American Petroleum Institute, and the Robert A. Taft Sanitary Engineering Laboratory of the U.S.P.H.S.). A group in the Pentagon Building in Washington, D.C., has also been supplied, in connection with the consideration of the problem of certain governmental specifications for gasoline. The Public Health Service has responded to the inquiry of the manufacturers of TML, concerning their reaction to the intention of the industry to sanction the use by their customers of lead in motor gasoline up to a certain limit of weight, regardless of the organometal compound introduced (i.e., TEL, TML and their deviatives), by pointing out that, whereas they have no authority to approve or disapprove, they see no reason for differeniating between TML and TEL. The investigation, therefore, has served its purpose well in resolving this matter to the satisfaction of the industries concerned. Lead equivalent in weight to that introduced in 4 ml. of TEL can be added to gasoline, as TML or any mixture, so long as this weight of lead (Pb) is not exceeded. The completion and issuance of the report in its final form has been unduly delayed, but the earlier draft was submitted, meanwhile, to the Public Health Service and the Pentagon officials, in evidence of the facts and in order to expedite such consideration and action as might be desirable (as well as to the sponsors of the investigation). We have profited by.the comments and criticisms made, and the final report Is a distinct improvement^ in several respects, over the initial draft. l a m grateful to you and your associates for your suggestions, and Z trupt you will find this version satisfactory in all respects. 3 L. It has been suggested to me informally, by representatives of the Service, that we would do well to repeat these observations in the near future, and especially to follow up the clinichl observations in some detail. I shall bring this up, in due course, for the consideration of the industrial groups concerned. I mention this at this time to you, informally, since I would like to have your reaction to the feasibility of examining a large proportion of the persons involved in the survey, as well as your view of the entire matter, before taking any other step.
