Dear Leila,
Consensus is near universal that government intervention in electricity markets is a bad idea. From the Washington Post to The Wall Street Journal, from electric grid operators to renewable energy advocates, from Democrats to Republicans - it's hard to find anyone who supports proposals to bail out unprofitable coal and nuclear plants at the expense of consumers.
Competitive markets for power have succeeded in providing affordable, reliable and safe electricity to homes and businesses. Now there's a proposal on the table that would force power operators to make their fuel purchases based on government mandates, not on what's best for consumers. All five members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) confirmed again last week that claims of a national security justification for such interference are unfounded. In a hearing before the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee, FERC commissioners stated that the markets are "working hyper efficiently," testifying "there is no immediate calamity or threat to our ongoing ability to have our bulk power system operate and satisfy the energy needs."
Major editorial boards from coast to coast agree - highlighting the consequences to consumers:
Washington Post: "Americans could pay hundreds of millions, and perhaps billions, more every year for energy. Wholesale electricity markets could collapse as efficient power plants failed to compete with subsidized dinosaurs... If Mr. Trump proceeds and the courts somehow allow such a perversion of the law, it would be hard to stop the next Democratic president from, say, using emergency powers to force the purchase of renewables at the expense of coal, oil and natural gas."
The Wall Street Journal: "PJM, which manages wholesale power markets across 13 states in the mid-Atlantic and Midwest, says `there is no immediate threat to system reliability' and the region currently has a 25% energy capacity surplus... Mandating that grid operators buy more expensive coal and nuclear power would raise consumer prices and could reduce natural gas production that has been a boon to many states. "
Los Angeles Times: "Continuing to operate financially nonviable power plants and forcing grid operators to buy power they don't need or want is an unacceptable governmental intrusion into the power market that, by one analysis, would needlessly cost consumers hundreds of millions of dollars."
Multiple power sources have a role to play in supplying electricity - including natural gas, which powers one in three homes and businesses, also serving as a critical partner in renewable generation. The competitive market, not government intervention, is the best system to ensure efficient, affordable and cleaner energy.

Dear Secretary Zinke and Scheduling Staff, New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) is pleased to invite Secretary Zinke to an event in New Mexico's San Juan Basin on August 14, 2018.
Itinerary Draft (theme and other event details can be changed based on your input)
When: The event is scheduled on August 14, from 5 7 pm.
Where: In the Four Corners New Mexico San Juan Basin area, most likely in Farmington, NM.
What: The event is called a BASH (Business and Social Hour) and would highlight 'Energy and the Vast Natural Resources of our State.' We would be honored to have Secretary Zinke speak about how the great work going on in the Department of Interior, how it impacts New Mexicans in general and specifically in the San Juan Basin area; etc.
Who Attends: State, County and Municipal level elected and appointed officials, San Juan County School of Energy officials/faculty/students, business leaders from all sectors, especially from electric utility, coal mining, energy and oil/gas industries that are heavily active in the 4 Corners region, economic development officials, Chamber of Commerce officials/members, and members of the Farmington and surrounding community. Regional, statewide and national media would also be interested in this event with Secretary Zinke as keynote speaker.
Travel Arrangement options: Fly into Durango Co, a one hour drive to Farmington; or fly into Albuquerque, a 3 hour drive to Farmington. There are several nice hotels in Farmington (Marriott & a few others.)
Depending on the availability of Secretary Zinke and the flight times effecting his arrival in the Farmingnton area, NMBC can coordinate a meeting with key NM elected/appointed and business leaders (Secretary of NM Energy, Minerals, & Natural Resources, State Land Commissioner, NM Oil & Gas Association, etc.) before/after the BASH event.
