Composition Over 290 U.S. and foreign companies actively participate in Panels and Councils. Large and small manufacturers, formulators, users, and distributors make up the broadly-based array of chemical industry firms that characterize CHEMSTAR organizations. In addition, 40 associations participate in Panel and Council activities. Each Panel and Council is guided by a group of representatives from the member companies. Some Panels and Councils are assisted by task groups of company personnel who are experts in particular scientific or operations areas. When Panels and Councils need expertise that is unavailable in member companies they employ independent consultants. Advocacy Advocacy is a concern of 46 Panels and four of the Councils. Activities include interactions with federal, international and state agencies. These forums educate member company personnel, government regulators and the scientific and technical community about a variety of health, safety and environmental issues. Communication Panels and Councils produce press releases, white papers, scientific and technicaljournal articles and book chapters, these materials all are aimed at promoting a better understanding of issues important to member companies. Evaluation Panels and Councils engage in many types of assessment-related activities. These efforts include facilitating data collection by individual companies and non-proprietary information sharing on company practices in safety and operations areas. Litigation Involvement of Panels in litigation activities range from status as principals in lawsuits to filing ofamicus briefs in lawsuits involving other principals.
