1 RUBBER
/ '' The principal function of talc in rubber is as a dusting powder. It is an ideal dry lubricant for both dry and wet dusting and for m old coating. Sierra has a talc designed for every rubber need:
S I t R R i . Y .'K H E " i n . " is . low-cost, all around dry dusting agent. Soft and non-abrasive, it adds the required "slip" to ru b b e r both natural and synthetic. It is m ade from the soft,
m assive type oftalc.
SIEF.RA VihITL f III fo th e sam e as Sierra W hite " IR "

SILVER TALC IS is a fin e g ro u n d d ry In b ric a n t fo r
exterior dusting o f ru b b er gloves and soft rubber goods in th e p la n t Its "d rie r" tex tu re assures that the gloves will not stick together and will leave no tell-tale blotches of talc on th e surface as will m ore sticky talcs.
SIERRA SAGGER TALC h a s e x tre m e "slip." I t is th e
softest o f all the Sierra com m ercial talcs, has a platey particle stru ctu re, will go fu rth er, an d is recom m ended as onr best dry Inbricant
A IR E X TALC is prodneed especially for dusting of the elam-
shell m old in the production o f balloons, balls, and sponge rubber. Its hard crystalline structure and coarser grind p e r m it th e mold to "breathe," th u s preventing pin holes caused by entrapm ent o f a ir in th e m old.
RICE COATING

TEXTILE FINISHING
Talc U used in the back-filling o f cotton goods at the finishing m ills. P rin c ip a l requirem ents are w hiteness of color, freedom from abrasiveness, and fineness of grind.
SIERRA SPECIAL TEXTILE TALC meets a l l .h e
requirem ents. It is m aintained to a high standard of quality fo r th is industry. SIERRA SPECIA L T E X T IL E TALC is produced from our softest talcs which accounts for its low grit content and freedom from abrasiveness. It reduces the tendency o f filled goods to dull the cutting knives and cause needle heating. It im parts p ro p e r viscosity to the starch m ix tu re w ithout th in n in g . It fills the th read lattices th o ro u g h ly leaving no pin-holes. It assures a smooth, velvety finish.
SIERRA FIT'RE RE TAt C is also offered to the Textile
trad e where still greater whiteness is required.
SIERRA KI-GRARE is suggested w hen m axim um chem
ical parity is required.
SPECIAL TEXTILE TAIC, however, is m ade especially
fo r the textile industry and is the standard o f the lead in g textile finishing mills o f the U nited States.
s PAPER MAKING

kfin ish e r. T h e ta lc m u st be re la tiv e ly low 'in grit content and have good filling and
covering characteristics.
Talc has several distinct advantages over o th er m ineral fillers. It im parts from 10% to 25% greater m ineral retention th an clay, m aking it superior for heavily filled papers such as order form s, offset paper, and book stock. It is norm ally b righter, lightens the pulp, imparts greater m oisture resistance, and adds greater strength.
It ia superior to clay in the better grades of w riting papers because it m akes a less absorptive paper. Talc is an excellent ex ten d er o f titanium dioxide in coated papers and board stock. It is ideal for wax coated stock due to its translucency and smoothness.
T h e follow ing a re S ierra's leading p a p e r m ak ers grades:
T H I L I I Y S t^ t t r . f 11. L is e x tra w hite, tran slu c en t, platey particle structure, extrem ely finely ground, free o f grit, less th an 1% alkalinity -- the 4deal titanium dioxide extender. T he use of as m uch as 50% o f T rinity Superfine will not m aterially lower the hiding power of titanium . It insures stab ility o f emulsions. It is recom m ended for waxed paper stock, high quality hoard stock, and coated papers.
S t r n U , CS r k. L is slightly less w hite th an T rin ity Super
fine hu t equally fine. The rounder particle structure of Sierra
C loud m akes it ideal fo r high grade w riting papers. It is of
th e massive, soft steatite variety.

INSECTICIDES
T a le la need principally as a c a rrie r in insecticide dusts. It is com patible with m ost of the killers and releases the toxic base quickly. O ther extenders are volcanic ash, pyrophyllite, diatomaceous e a rth , a n d clays. All o f these, except clay, are highly abrasive and cause excessive wear to the spray equipm ent. Clay has a tendency to "hall u p " and the flowing characteristics are therefore poor. Talc is non-abrasive, soft, sm ooth, and flows readily. S ierra p ro d u ces two excellent talcs for this uses
S i r .L F ;/ . W fr. n t TALC " t r . " T h is is a soft talc (m agnesium silicate) o f the steatite variety. It is the sm oother and better flow ing o f the two talcs an d is ideal for sulphur, nicotine, etc.
n r CUtC is a unique m ineral of the talc family, being
a m agnesium alum inum silicate. It wets m ore easily and has g re a te r adhesiveness. It is less alkaline and has m et with approval as a carrier particularly for DDT and the newer chem ical killers.
SOAP MANUFACTURING
Talc is used in only the filled hand and laundry soaps, cake, flakes, and powder. . Its principal function is as a filler and an extender.
SIERRA WHITE - 20 0 end SURF:L SHOW TALCS are the
two recom m ended grades. M ore fully described elsewhere in this pam phlet, their physical smoothness and "slip " recom
m e n d them for any soap use.
ROOFING AND
MISCELLANEOUS
Talc will prevent roofing paper sheets from sticking together when packed. Being non-hydroscopic, it is th e best dusting agent avail able. SIE R R A W H IT E " IR " is the recom m ended grade. Talc has many other industrial uses and Sierra has a talc for each use.

S IE R R A WHITE " i r . " is recommended for wet dusting o f foundry molds.
